Boaters rely on boat gauges to communicate a ton of information. Unfortunately, much of that information is plain wrong.
Fuel gauges are notorious for being inaccurate. You can blame the design. Marine fuel tanks often have V-shaped bottoms so they can fit into a boat's hull.
Because of this, there's only a third or less of a tank of fuel when the sender's float is halfway down. This may seem familiar because of your experience with your car's gas gauge. You can be driving with your fuel gauge sitting at 1/4, then without warning, you're almost on empty! The fuel gauge on your boat can be as deceptive.
Also, take into consideration the wear and tear on the sender. The float and arm get a steady workout if you're on the water a lot. They never stand still due to the constant pounding. If you're getting inaccurate readings, then it's best to replace your fuel gauge and sender.
It also helps to know about your boat’s fuel burn and operating range. You want an engine tachometer for this. This could save you from running out of gas and making that embarrassing call for a tow.
Boat gauges and monitors are vital to safeguarding electrical systems from overload. They represent windows into your boat's engines. Without them, your equipment would fail without warning.
The number and variety of boat gauges have increased, but there are two basic elements to track: pressure and temperature. With an oil pressure gauge, you can watch the meter, and stop the engine should the oil pressure drop. A faulty oil pump could be the cause. You may be low on oil or have a clogged oil filter. Never ignore a change in oil pressure. Without oil, your engine will fail and die.
Temperature extremes can cause serious damage to your engine. A water temperature gauge lets you know how hot your water-cooled engine is running. A damaged pump impeller is one cause of high temperatures. Also, low engine-cooling water levels and dirty coolers could be the culprits.
